16 June – into the Pyrenees

A fairly easy ride into the Pyrenees today, at 74km long.

The first part of our journey was around 20km, past wind turbines in still conditions, to the pretty town of Lumbier. We stopped for breakfast here and then through farmland to Aoiz. The ride between Aoiz and Nagore (on a dam) was hilly but manageable, mostly wooded terrain and passing through two tunnels.

The best part of the ride was in the early afternoon, a nice shaded quiet river route to Auritz-Burguete. The gradient was very gentle. At this point we are definitely in the Pyrenees area – the houses all look Alpine again, not at all Spanish. There are also cows with cow bells here! It is also a little cooler.

Tomorrow we complete our crossing of the mountains and arrive back in France.
