Java swing gui clashes with the 3D accelerated desktop under Java 1.5, so the stitch gui doesnt display properly under older versions of Java.
You can see which version of java you have by typing
the following command on Windows (cmd?) or in a linux shell:
java -version
For some Linux distributions, Java can be installed easily by using the builtin package manager. The Apple's version of the JDK is integrated into Mac OS X, and an update to Java often requires an upgrade of the operating system. Refer to Apple's Mac OS X Web site. Otherwise, see the http://java.sun.com/ site. You may need to assign the install path on your PC to the JAVA_HOME environment variable.
The program is free to use (like free beer). You can use the program in its original form. I obviously do not assume liability for any use or mis-use of the program.
The download is very small, ok for dial-up.

In a perfect world, all you will have to do is type in:
java -jar stitch.jar
